EDA STYLES/CLASSES 2008

ACROBATICS [ACRO]

Acrobatics at EDA is a sports acrobatics/tumbling class, teaching students body awareness, coordination and team work. At a beginner’s level, students are taught the basic steps, stretches and holds that will eventually allow them to build to some of the more classically recognised acrobatics moves such as walk over, round off etc as they progress through the EDA levels from Bronze/Silver to Gold and Platinum.

BALLET [B] – EXAM CLASS – Classical Ballet Page

The Royal Academy of Dancing is the world’s most accredited syllabus. This method of classical ballet employs a sound structure of teaching correct posture, technique, musicality, presentation, discipline and artistry. For this reason, ballet is an essential component to mastering other forms of dance. Students taking Exam classes at EDA are required to do at least two (2) classes per week and will be sent for R.A.D. exams at the teachers’ discretion. Students will also perform at our end of year concert. Please note: these classes at EDA are for exam students only, all other ballet students should consider a Ballet Technique class.

BALLET [B] – TECHNIQUE CLASS – Classical Ballet Page

This class is designed for students who undertake ballet to improve posture, carriage of the arms, strength, precision and overall technique. This class is for ballet beginners and for those interested in ballet but not wishing to take R.A.D. exams. Some syllabus work may be used to help develop technical awareness.

CHEERLEADING [CC]

This class uses a mix of Jazz and Funk styles, incorporating pom-poms, tricks, and patterns and other elements employed in cheerleading teams around the world for visual effects.

CONTEMPORARY [C] – Classical Ballet Page

A lyrical, release based class incorporating the fundamentals of classical and contemporary dance. This abstract style of dance is locally recognized as that of Sydney Dance Company, Bangarra Dance Theatre and, of course, the H.S.C. dance syllabus.

DYNAMITES [DYNA]

EDA’s Junior Performance Team is for dancers aged from 4 - 8yrs. Students attend additional weekly classes focused on performance skills where they learn dance routines, fashion parades and pantomime material for example. Students are consequently involved in performances including Christmas Promotions, local Fetes, fashion parades etc. Please note: Participation in DYNAMITES is through audition or invitation only, interest should be registered on enrolment.

EDANCE [EDANCE]

Our Senior Performance Team is for students aged 8-16yrs. Dancers are involved in additional weekly classes and are encouraged to develop performance skills that transcend age group limits. They are involved in performances ranging from the Shanghai Tourism Festival [China Tour 2006] to Christmas Promotions and local festivals, concerts, corporate and public events. Students are treated to a range of teachers designed to maximize the styles covered and performance experience gained. Please note: Participation in EDANCE is through audition or invitation only, interest should be registered on enrolment.

FUNK – BOYS [BF]

Similarities can be drawn to both the other funk and hip hop classes available at EDA. This class, however, is tailored to a boys only group. Students will attempt various levels of combinations, floorwork and will touch on tricks relevant to commercial dance for boys.

FUNK – GIRLS [GF]

A girls only class featuring a modern style that blends together Jazz, Street Attitude, and Hip- Hop.

HIP HOP [HIP]

A very commercial dance style seen in many R’n’B/ hip hop music videos and live dance arenas. This class values a raw approach to dance with a street style and use of body isolations and combinations with a distinct attitude and edge.

JAZZ [J]

A class incorporating elements of traditional jazz techniques (turns, leaps/jumps, isolations, flexibility, footwork etc), strong lines, precise moves and fast paced music. EDA jazz classes offer a blended class with use of funk and hip hop styles at times – a fusion of modern dance styles.

KARA TE DO [KR]

translates to “empty hand way” of self defense. A student will learn various blocks, strikes, kicks, punches and stances to enable them to defend themselves in many situations. Through physical training students will learn how to coordinate their bodies, mind and spirit. In karate-do students will learn self discipline, self confidence and self esteem which will help them in their every day lives. The style of karate do practiced at EDA is Shotokan which is practiced all over the world with its origins lying in Japan.

KATA [KT]

The kata of karate-do are logical arrangements of blocking, punching, striking and kicking techniques in certain set sequences designed to defend against either single or multiple opponents who may or may not be armed. In all there are 26 Kata practiced which students will learn throughout their training. By the time a student is ready to grade for black belt they will be required to master the first 10 kata.

LYRICAL [L]

A slower, soft, expressive form of dance incorporating technical elements from both jazz and ballet. This style is often described as telling a story or communicating a feeling. Please note: to take a lyrical class at EDA, students must also take at least one ballet class per week.

MUSICAL THEATRE [MT]

A class that covers a range of excerpts from various Broadway musicals, as well as teaching the art of musical comedy, slapstick, mime and how to entertain and engage the audience as a performer.

STOMP - BOYS [BS]

Students wear tap shoes and the class is similar to a tap class however the emphasis is on the combining of different rhythms, the inclusion of body percussion, the arrangement of the steps and formation of pattern. On some occasions props such as tapping sticks, bongo drums and everyday metal objects are used to create a further percussion dimension.

STRETCH & CONDITIONING

This is a training foundation class aimed to increase a dancer’s endurance, agility, stamina and flexibility. The strength element of the class involves exercises from known methods such as Pilates, Yoga and Body Resistance Training, with particular focus on core stability. The Stretch component is designed to improve the dancer’s flexibility through a range of Static and PNF Stretches. Both the Stretch and Conditioning aspects are further developed through fun locomotor routines involving leaps and axial turns.

TAP [T]

Students wear metal plated tap shoes and learn a rhythmical style of dance combining steps to music both old and new. We aim to create various rhythms straight, slow, syncopated and speed. We teach both freestyle tap focusing on timing, light and shade, style and performance and for the technical elements we implement the Glenn Wood Tap (GWT) syllabus to develop clarity and attainment of specific skills.
